Two bases, not seven towns
A week in Britain wants two beds. The first near where you land, the second where the landscape actually is. Every extra hotel night is a morning spent packing and a train you will remember as a corridor.
Independent travel desk

Advance singles on the London–York and London–Edinburgh runs are the fare that makes the trip feel cheap or expensive. Regional hops can wait. Engineering work is posted late, so leave a daylight buffer on the day you must fly.
Do not collect a car at Heathrow for a city you will not drive in. Pick it up in Cornwall, Inverness, or Haverfordwest, on the morning the landscape requires it, and give it back before the city.

England
A walkable stone city
Bath is compact, on the railway, and easy to overstay once you have done the centre. Pair it with one day that is not the famous crescent.

England
One village, not eight
The honey stone is real. So are the coach parks. Stay in one village with a pub and a footpath, and refuse the village-hopping circuit.
