Operating notes

The desk.

The reference sites are encyclopedias and membership clubs. This page is the part they bury: how not to waste the week. Read it before you open a map.

  1. Note 1

    Two bases, not seven towns

A week in Britain wants two beds. The first near where you land, the second where the landscape actually is. Every extra hotel night is a morning spent packing and a train you will remember as a corridor.

  2. Note 2

    Buy the long trains first

Advance singles on the London–York and London–Edinburgh runs are the fare that makes the trip feel cheap or expensive. Regional hops can wait. Engineering work is posted late, so leave a daylight buffer on the day you must fly.

  3. Note 3

Hire the car where the lanes start

Do not collect a car at Heathrow for a city you will not drive in. Pick it up in Cornwall, Inverness, or Haverfordwest, on the morning the landscape requires it, and give it back before the city.

  4. Note 4

May and September are the product

July and August are school holidays, festival month in Edinburgh, and the reason coastal rooms cost what they cost. Late April through early June, and September, are when the path is open and the pub has a table.

  5. Note 5

    The map is a liar

Britain is small and slow. A hundred miles of Highland single-track is a day. A hundred miles of East Coast main line is a coffee. If you flew from Australia, the error is trying to ‘do’ England, Scotland, and Wales because the flight was long.

  6. Note 6

Pay like a local, not like a tourist desk

Contactless cards work almost everywhere you will actually eat. Tipping is a round-up in a restaurant, not a percentage performance. Prices on this site are in pounds and are orders of magnitude, not quotes. The Australian dollar will have moved by the time you book.

Put the notes to work

The sketch turns this into beds and moving days. It will refuse a car-free Highland loop, because that trip does not exist.
